Halley's Comet - Facts, Information, & Pictures

Halley's Comet is named for British astronomer Edmond Halley who was the first person to calculate the comet's orbit.  It orbits the Sun approximately every 75 years.  The last sighting of Halley's Comet was in 1986 and will not appear again until 2061.  It is amongst the brightest of all comets and people have recorded this comet for thousands of years.

The nucleus of Halley's Comet is composed mainly of ice with dimensions of 15km(10miles) by 8km(5 miles).  It hardly reflects any light whatsoever, but when it approaches the Sun, Halley's jets spew gas making it a rather bright object.
