Comet Hyakutake - Facts, Information, and Pictures

Comet Hyakutake was discovered in January 1996.  It was an unusually bright comet.  It passed within 15million kilometers (9.3 million miles) which is rather close approach, although did not even come close to being a threat to Earth.  Photograph images have shown that Comet Hyakutake's tail extends half a billion kilometers (over 300 million miles).   This is the longest tail of any comet that we are aware of.

Comet Hyakutake is a long period comet that travels through the solar system and orbits the Sun only once every 100,000 years.  Large amounts of ethane methane were found in Comet Hyakutake.  This was a rather unusual finding as this was the first comet discovered with these chemicals present.  It may belong to a new class of comets.
