Learning Center

Lots of people have seen computerized images of the planets. And nearly everybody has looked up at the stars at least once. Elementary kids learn all about the heliocentric solar system throughout their school career, and that information is built upon once they reach high school. But to know about something isn’t the same as to look at something and really study it. There once was a time when the universe and the sky and the stars and the sun were all mysteries, at best discussed in metaphorical and religious terms, but without anything solid or concrete. Galileo was the first to challenge the so-called natural order of the universe by studying it, questioning it, and creating new theories about how the Earth’s place in the cosmos—namely not at the center of things. All of that was possible because of the invention of telescopes, and it is possible now for children and adults to use telescopes to make their own discoveries about the universe.

Telescopes are relatively simple instruments in theory, but in practice, there is a whole range of available telescopes, the differences great and minute. The biggest, most primary distinction between telescopes is glasses versus mirrors. A telescope with two glass lenses in a refractory scope. A telescope with one or more mirror is a reflecting telescope. There is also a third option, which is a combination of the two. Galileo is credited with inventing the refracting telescope, but it’s not so well known that Isaac Newton made the first operable reflection telescope.
